    Default Handy Applications

This is a thread for sharing links to your favourite FREE applications.

Please do not link to applications you have to pay for or their free version on torrent sites etc. All links should be to freeware or shareware (i.e. free trials).

I'll start with this nifty little application called Fences by Stardock. 100% free. It allows you to group together your desktop icons, making them easier to find and orgaznise. I love it!

    Hmm Ill go next
I would like to introduce DropBox
    DropBox Download
This program makes a folder and and what you put in it, gets uploaded to the Dropbox website. this program is Free for 2GB, but you get extra space by inviting new users...or...paying... honestly... the 2GB works for me.. So Strongly recommend Dropbox because you can put DB on 2 computers put a file in one folder on 1 computer, then wait a few seconds or minutes [depending on connection speed] and it will show up on the other computer. Honestly, this helps out if I forget a paper..i can go to the website on any computer [mac, pc, linux,] and download it from the website.. it is amazing.
Yes you can download your files from online on any computer..or a computer with a dropbox downloaded folder..
it is Private, So you can set what people can see, and not see... [or...wait.. no one can see..unless you make a share folder...which is different from the public folder]

    Enjoy.
BTW that link, gives you extra space [i think] because it gives me and you extra space. like 256MB or 512mb..i forgot.

How about a foxit reader, very light alternative for that annoying slow Adobe Reader!!! xD
    http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/
This foxit reader just weight at around 3MB while Adobe Reader is around 30MB 0_0. So it's only 10%!!!. Yet, it has many many manyyyyyy features in it and it is just great and perfect for personal use xD
    P.S. It's a 100% Free software xD

Malawarebyte is a awesome little proggy that removes pesty malicious software!
    Its free
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/

CCleaner ... Its a cleaning tool!

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner. But the best part is that it's fast (normally taking less than a second to run) and contains NO Spyware or Adware!

    Realtime Antivirus Programs

Usually, with your standard antivirus there is a lag between the development of a virus definition and that definition updated to your antivirus's database. Now, we can get those definitions - and thus protection - immediately. These tools are lightweight (not resource hogs) and, other than Panda Cloud, are intended to work in tandem with your current antivirus. Her are the links/info:

    Panda Cloud
Publisher's description: "Panda Cloud Antivirus is the first free cloud-based antivirus thin-client. It consists of a lightweight antivirus agent that is connected in real-time to PandaLabs' Collective Intelligence servers to protect faster against the newest malware variants while barely impacting PC performance."

Here is an article that states the beta version of Cloud outdetected other free antivirus programs. It is originally written for PC World Magazine but since their site is so applet-ridden, I am linking you to a simpler site: Can You Trust Free Antivirus Software?.

    PCTools Threatfire
Publisher's description: "Traditional antivirus solutions cannot protect you until after they have discovered a new threat and produced a signature to counter it. ThreatFire does not rely on signatures, but instead provides behavior-based protection. It is designed to be used alongside your existing antivirus software and it fills the gap in protection between your antivirus signature updates."

It also has the best process watcher/system monitor feature EVER. It not only tells you the names of the processes, but what they are, where they are from, where they appear in your registry, and what they've recently done. I couldn't find a screenshot of this feature, so I took one myself. The highlighted process is the program I used for the capture. And oh yeah, it categorizes them too.

    IObit Security 360
Publisher's Description: "IObit Security 360 is a free malware & spyware removal utility that detects, removes the deepest infections, and protects your PC from various of potential spyware, adware, trojans, keyloggers, bots, worms, and hijackers."

IMO, this is not better than Threatfire, simply because it does not have the awesomesauce process watcher feature. It does, however, have some cool defensive features and a HijackThis like utility, which are always useful.

I discovered SimpleAdBlock which is an extension for IE run with Windows up to Windows 7.

This will allow you to browse the Internet and visit sites without worrying anymore about annoying pop-up ads or messages, as a few might be malware (and you can't know).

    Very useful and free :

    - Re-edited to correct the link. Sorry this one is correct now. I tested and it works just super fine.

Open Office Org that opens Word documents. Word Microsoft EULA changed for licences, that need to be renewed after + 20 opening of a document or the application. In Windows 7 Word and associated applications are no longer added to the PC system programmes.

Open Office is freeware and safe to use :

I use it all the time----It works!

HINT: When using this or any anti-virus, anti-spam, etc. software, it is good sometimes to go into safe mode on occasion and run those programs because sometimes, you can get a very smart virus that can hide when running under normal mode. That is because when you are running Windows in normal mode, all of the drivers are loaded, and a really smart virus can confuse your anti-virus software and make it think that it's a normal file when of course, it is not,

So...what you need to do is turn off all of those drivers by running SAFE MODE, and the way that you do this is reboot your system, and as soon as your system is rebooting (DO NOT WAIT FOR THE BLUE SCREEN!), start hitting the F8 button over and over again, and a black screen menu will appear. Select "SAFE MODE", and let Windows load and sign on. You will not be able to surf the net, so before you reboot, update all of your anti-virus software's databases, THEN go to the SAFE MODE.

Once your computer is in SAFE MODE, run the scan (It might take all day, but will be worth it!), and delete any unsafe files that it finds, then once you have run all of your anti-virus software(s), reboot and let Windows load normally!igwings1
